Craftsmen at work, Materials almost done, Tools looking good..!
almost 9 years ago – Thu, Jun 08, 2017 at 09:56:57 AM

Dear friends of Markhor,

We wanted to send the awaited update on our progress and expected delivery.

Materials
In May, we have been working to procure leather from our local tanner in Lahore. Having direct access to both the craftsmen and leather suppliers is one of our strengths, but it was still challenging to get the right shade of White leather. ;) Black and Tan colors were easier to make in 1.1–1.2mm thickness of full-grain natural leather.

(Dilawar inspecting the quality of leather one more time before working on it. The quality of this leather is mind blowing.)

We are also receiving the felted wool from Nangong city of China, to be used in the sleeves. The shank boards are die cut and ready to be used in the Mac Pads and Mouse Pads.

Surveys
Secondly, last few weeks we have been receiving Survey Responses from most of you. 20% still have not filled their yet, please do it at your earliest for a timely delivery. If you have any question, write us at [email protected]

Craftsmanship
Our new workshop just added two new machines and few tools that we shipped from San Francisco. These will be used for making accessories for you all and beyond.

(About machines: On the bottom left is Skiving machine to reduce the thickness of leather at a desired gauge. Next to that in the top left corner is Post-bed Stitching machine, it is used to stitch very thick leather (up to half inch), commonly used to stitch boots and backpacks. One the top right is commonly used stitching machines used to stitch some of our packaging materials like shoe bags and wallets bags etc and other fabrics.)

Our small of team of craftsmen lead by Dilawar, has started making, and below is the order:

  • Markhor Mac Pad (plains) in cutting process
  • Markhor Mac Pad (foldable)
  • Markhor Mouse Pad
  • Markhor Sleeve

Shipping
Tufail Ahmad from our team has started working on the packaging already, so once the products are ready we ship them without spending any extra time. Our estimated shipping date for the first batch is July 15, 2017 and we are most likely to follow this order:

  • US and Canada (July 15–July 22)
  • Europe (July 22–July 29)
  • Asia (July 29)

Here’s what is coming next:

1. Expect your reward survey to be coming this Tuesday, where you would be able to choose the details of your reward and shipping address etc.

2. You will also be able to make change(s) in your reward or add new products. As promised in last update, Bi-fold and Slim Wallets are coming!

3. All Kickstarter backers will also have access to our exclusive bi-monthly newsletter called Creative Playbook.

Thank you again for your support and please don’t hesitate to ask a question if you have one!

Enjoy your weekend,

Sidra, Waqas and Markhor team!

Why we chose Wool over Synthetic Felt for our Sleeves?
almost 9 years ago – Tue, Apr 18, 2017 at 05:48:46 PM

Choosing a new material is always tricky. Naturally, we were conscious to move beyond leather because we wanted to do it right. After careful deliberation we came up with some key attributes that the new material must posses:

  • It should be water resistant. Leather is liquid vary so this was our number one requirement for any new material.
  • It should be able to protect the MacBook/iPad from minor bumps.
  • It should be lightweight and soft so that MacBooks/iPads don’t get scratches because of it.
  • And it should be eco friendly.

Natural wool felt came out as the winner with synthetic felt as a second option. But as we move further into prototyping and testing, we realized that synthetic felt, while looks similar, actually falls short on a couple of key attributes we identified earlier.

For one, Synthetic Felt is hard because of plastic fibers mixed in it. There is a strong chance that this might damage your MacBook. Secondly, It’s not eco friendly. As you can see in the video, the material burned very quickly—again because of plastic inside.

Material Confirmation, Leather Wallets, Forbes 30 Under 30!
almost 9 years ago – Sun, Apr 16, 2017 at 02:28:39 AM

Hi friends,

Waqas here from Markhor.

Past few days have been filled with some exciting developments around Markhor, and we wanted to share with you.

Whilst, we had already selected the leather tannery we would work with. We just got confirmation samples for quality, color and thickness. Now we are placing a larger order for leather that should be delivered in 20-30 days and then we start making your accessories.

We launched this Kickstarter, as a way to develop few products in house in our newly opened workshop. Later this month, we will be launching another exciting product, a premium quality leather bi-fold and slim wallet. I have been testing the bi-fold wallet for two months now, and it has already gotten amazing remarks from friends and strangers. Stay tuned!

Last but not least, I am thrilled to share that Forbes included me in their list of Forbes 30 Under 30 in Asia. They recognize that Markhor’s idea of making high-end products in developing countries like Pakistan and direct-to-consumer model can change the retail industry. You can learn more from here.

This would not have been possible without the support from each one of you. Please help us by spreading the word on social media.

We will keep making the best possible products for you. Thank you!

Warmly,

Waqas Ali
